Course Overview
The American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course is designed to provide entry-level lifeguards with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will also learn how to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) arrive.

Eligibility Requirements

Participants must be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session.

Blended Learning Requirement
This is a blended learning course, which includes both online and in-person components.

A portion of the course must be completed online prior to attending the first class.

After registering, participants will receive an email with instructions for completing the online portion.

A certificate of completion must be presented on the first day of class.

Prerequisite Skills Evaluation
On the first day, after submitting proof of online completion, participants must successfully complete the following:

Swim Test
-
-
Swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination (no back or side swimming).

Demonstrate rhythmic breathing.
-
-
-
Goggles are permitted.
-
-
-
-
-
Treading Water
-
-
Tread water for 2 minutes using only legs (hands under armpits).

-
-
Timed Event (1 minute, 40 seconds)
-
-
Swim 20 yards (goggles not allowed).
-
-
-
Perform a surface dive (7–10 feet) to retrieve a 10-pound object.
-

-
Return to the surface and swim 20 yards back, holding the object with both hands and keeping your face near the surface.

-
Exit the pool without using a ladder or steps.

Certification Requirements
To receive certification, participants must:

Attend all class sessions

Successfully complete all required skills
-

Pass three final skill scenarios
-

Achieve a minimum score of 80% on each section of the written exam

Certification Validity
-

Lifeguarding / First Aid / CPR / AED certifications are valid for 2 years
